=Title Overview of the IconAuthor Copy IconWare Utility
Copy Iconware - The Copy Iconware Command allows you to copy
an existing application and its' associated files to a central
directory for distribution. The Copy Iconware function
automatically copies the Iconware application file, as well as
the graphic, text, database, format, animate, variable and
other iconware files used in the application.
The Copy Iconware function is useful for distributing your
Iconware. IconAuthor and The Presentation System have an
Install Iconware function. Used together, the Copy and
Install Iconware functions make application distribution
simple. By using these functions, the developer and the
users avoid repetitious file copying, and the potential for
forgetting a critical file. When the Copy Iconware Command is
given, IconAuthor uses the currently defined directory paths
for the graphic, text, animate, database, format and variable
files. The current directories are defined by the system path
variables defined in the file "iauthor.var". If your Iconware
application uses directory paths that are different than the
standard, you must set those paths before using the Copy Iconware
function. You can set the directory paths by loading a
variable file that contains the appropriate directory path
system variable values or by using Variable Icons to
individually set the directory path system variable values.
A simple way to do this procedure is to run the application.
If the application uses different directory paths, then as
part of running the application, the directory path system
variables should be set. The value of the directory path
system variables, when you exit the application, are used
during the Copy Iconware routine.
You can check the values of the directory path system
variables by using the Variable Editor.
When the Copy Iconware Command is used, IconAuthor searches
the application you specify for all the associated files in
that Iconware application. IconAuthor creates a new file
with the same name as the application, but with a .CPY file
extension; for example, Myfile.IW and Myfile.CPY. When the
.CPY file is created it is date stamped with the same date
as the Iconware file. Both the Iconware file (*.IW) and the
.CPY file (*.CPY) are copied to the target directory.
The .CPY file is a list of all the files that are a part of
the application you are copying. This list includes all the
graphic, text, animation, database, format and variable files
that you used in your application. After the .CPY file is
created and copied, IconAuthor goes through the list of files
and copies each of them to the target directory.
Each time you use the Copy Iconware Command, IconAuthor
checks if a .CPY file exists for the file you are copying,
and if it has the same date stamp as the Iconware file. If
the date stamps are the same, then the existing .CPY file is
current. If the .CPY file is current then IconAuthor does
not recreate it, but simply reads the list of files and
copies them. If you Open and Save the Iconware application
after the .CPY file was created, then the .CPY file is no longer
current. The next time you use the Copy Iconware Command,
IconAuthor recreates the .CPY file, just in case you added or
deleted a file from the application.
Variables for Filenames - IconAuthor allows the use of
variables to specify any field in the icon Content Editor
dialog boxes. The filename of a graphic, text, database,
format, or animate file could be specified with a variable.
When the Copy Iconware Command is used, and IconAuthor encounters
a variable for the filename in an icon it resolves it by copying
all the files located in the default directory for the file type
of that variable.
The Copy Iconware function automatically copies the literal
filenames based on the current directory path system
variable values.
Filename - The Filename field specifies the name of the file
to be copied.
Copy To - The Copy To field specifies the target directory
path for the copy. for example -> DUA1:[JOE.COPY]
Protect Iconware from Edits - The Protect Iconware from
Edits box specifies whether the copied Iconware file should
be protected from being edited by other IconAuthor users.
To select the Protect Iconware option, position the mouse
pointer over the box and click the left mouse button. To
unselect the Protect Iconware function, click in the box
again. If you select the Protect Iconware option, a
protected version of the Iconware will be copied on to the
target directory. The IconAuthor authoring system will not
display or allow editing of protected Iconware. Once the
application has been copied under protected mode, you can
only view the iconware with a Presentation System. Please
note that the default is to not select Protect Iconware.
If you are making copies of Iconware for internal use or for
modification by others, then you should not protect your
Iconware. When you are distributing your final product to
your clients it may be a good idea to protect the Iconware.
Iconware Has Author Defined Paths - The Author Defined Paths
box is used to determine if the Iconware application uses
author defined directory paths or the standard directory
paths. This option impacts how the Iconware will be
installed when it is distributed. To select the Author
Defined Paths option, position the mouse pointer over the
box and click the left mouse button. To unselect the Author
Defined Paths option, click in the box again.
Select the Iconware Has Author Defined Paths if you, as the
author, have redefined the directory structure for the
iconware, graphic, text, database, format, animate, and variable
files used in the Iconware application. Selecting this option
insures that the files are installed in the same directory
structure when the application is distributed.
Do not select the Iconware Has Author Defined Paths if you,
as the author, have placed the iconware, graphic, text,
database, format, animate, and variable files used in the
Iconware application in the standard directory structure. Not
selecting this option insures that the files are installed in
the standard directory structure when the application is
distributed.
Copy Iconware Control Buttons

dialog box and initiates the Copy Iconware function.

box and returns control to IconAuthor.
Help - The Help button gives help on the Copy Iconware
dialog box.
